Always follow the care label on your sofa first. The guidance below is general and applies to most sofas.
Upholstery cleaning codes

| W | Clean with water-based upholstery cleaner or mild soap and water. |
| S | Solvent (dry-cleaning) cleaner only; water can leave rings. |
| WS or SW | Either water-based or solvent cleaner can be used. |
| X | Vacuum or brush only; no liquid cleaners. Use a professional for stains. |
When something spills
- Act quickly and blot with a clean, white cloth. Do not rub, which spreads the stain and damages the fibres.
- Work from the outside of the spill inwards.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden area first, and use only what the cleaning code allows.
- Let it dry naturally, away from direct heat.
Regular care
- Vacuum weekly with an upholstery brush.
- Rotate and flip loose cushions so they wear evenly, and plump fibre or feather cushions often.
- Keep sofas out of strong direct sunlight and away from radiators.
- For leather, dust with a dry cloth and condition only with products made for that type of leather.
- Removable, machine-washable covers should be washed exactly as their label says, usually cold and air-dried, to avoid shrinking.
